The webcomic Perry Bible Fellowship is excellent, but it updates once in a blue moon. This is nice, especially for things that don't update much, or update irregularly. I can click to go to the actual article, or if they're really nice the whole thing is already there in the feed. So instead of having to go and check if there are new articles/comics/whatever on every website I like, instead my RSS reader grabs all my subscribed feeds, scans them for new entries, and then gives them all to me in a list. It's basically a standardized way for something to put out a list of what's new. as well as many things that would otherwise send an email or notification.
